Health concerns of Sugar Gliders
There are certain definite issues regarding the fitness of a Sugar glider. So before you welcome it into the family, you need to know all of them and to make sure that emergency clinics as well as competent vets are readily available. A regular vet is glorious, but as these animals are night creatures they usually incline to get hurt at unearthly hours when an ER is your best bet. It is horrible not to have any backup option in case of such an emergency.
Because these animals are marsupials, ensure the vet does not cut down their teeth to size. Messing with their teeth only leads to toothache for these animals.
One thing you have to know beforehand is that Sugar gliders are most unlikely to toilet-train. They will defecate on any one if they need to. However, on the positive side, their small solid balls of excreta are rather simple to get rid off.
Sugar gliders of both sexes have a cloaca underneath their tails through which they pass their excretory material. Except for being their excretory organ the cloaca also doubles up as their reproductory organ in both sexes. Females give birth through this.
Because it is a marsupial, of the species has a pouch near the bottom of her stomach which holds the developing joey. The females are often pregnant for 16 days, after which a tiny reddish joey is born. The joey then clambers thru its mum’s pouch and attaches itself to a nipple there, which engorges quickly. In this state, it stays for over two months after which it comes out of the pouch, or is born. Just about two months after exiting its ma’s pouch, a joey is said to be mature enough for greener pastures.
On the other hand, you may expect a tiny patch without hair on the head and chest of an adult Sugar glider. You need to know that these spots contain glands that has scents. The oils there frequently taint the spot a bright ochre. And male Sugar Gliders generally pass pee or rub these scented spots on objects to mark their territory.
However, if you fix the male by cutting off the slim pinkish forked penis, the scent glands will immediately wither away, leading to regrowth of hair on those parts.
Watch your pet and learn its characteristics. Also remember, that because these animals are little, their sickness spreads really fast. So if you think something, you need to quickly take them for checkups and remove separate them from their healthy, violent mates susceptible to attacks. A healthy Sugar Glider will naturally attack the sick ones to purge their community. Even the mummy of a sick joey might turn cannibal and devour it up.
An injured Sugar Glider might eat itself. To death. So it is urgent that you keep a tight watch on the sick animal on your way to the vet.
However, if you follow all these instructions, your hurt Sugar Glider should be quite safe and good to go back to its mates upon recovery.
